Feel Me Flow

Rap music is taking quite a turn from what some of us remember from our younger days. We are going to have to give some of the new folks a pass. We’re going to have to go with the flow of the new wave. I always tell you all to give the new music some time to grow on you and don’t just jump out the window for an artist you don’t know that well. It may take a few months or a few years given the number of new Rappers that appear every day. For the first time ever I am confident enough to say that I am looking forward to the upcoming release from Migos. I know they aren’t Wu Tang Clan or any group of that caliber but these young men are working hard and are about to crossover thanks to Donald Glover’s shout out at the Golden Globe Awards.

In the upcoming years as “old school” Hip Hop music paves its new lane in the new digital age the current music will continue to change and evolve. “Mumble” rap may not even be around in the next five years, it may just be a fad. We know for sure that people are being categorized by their lyrical ability which is great! If a Rapper doesn’t have a good flow or good rhymes the audience will treat them like a disposable product. Someone who’s more verbal and witty may be looked upon as someone who has talent and will be around for the next ten years or more. A lot of the young Rappers won’t be able to perform their songs in twenty years on a boat show. The same way it didn’t last forever with the old heads is the same way it won’t last forever with the young Rappers. That includes J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar. They won’t be on top forever so we have to go with the flow and listen to something different.

Going with the flow shows growth in you as a person while others may get stuck or left behind in the past. The past is not coming back but we can listen to old albums and think back to those good memories. That classic Hip Hop music. If the new school and the old heads can find a way to come together and fuse their sounds I think some nice things can be done. This does not mean that you throw away all of the other music that you’ve been listening to nor do you have to listen to the radio. Technology allows for an artist to get their credit immediately without the thought of a middleman. You may not want to go through the hassle of locating the song online but if you care enough about the music you will take that extra time to do so. Don’t be so anti that you get left in the old way of thinking.
