This week Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott made yet another cultural impact on music by releasing new music! WTF (Where They From) is the first single off of her upcoming album titled Block Party. Missy’s last studio album was in 2005 however her creativity has been tapped for features and production but she has been earning writer’s credit on major hits since then. Missy Elliott is still one of the hottest emcees in the game even if she hasn’t released her own music in over a decade. This single dropped with much anticipation however nobody knew that her single would generate this much attention on social media and national news. Missy Elliott is an emcee that prides herself on quality music and doing things to push Hip Hop Culture forward. If you didn’t know once upon a time music videos aired on television channels such as MTV, Vh1, and BET Missy was the very first entertainer to showcase two songs in one video. Missy Elliott continually changed the music video game every single time she released a “visual”. Her use of technology in music videos led us to where we are today.
How is it that after ten years Missy Elliott can come in out of nowhere and change the game on such a grandiose scale? It’s because talent and quality cannot be denied! When you are as talented and creative as say a Missy Elliott nothing can stop your creativity from being expressed in any medium, form, or fashion. Missy’s style, rhymes, and personality are all top tier which allows her to effortlessly return to an industry that she never really left. Let’s compare apples to grapes, both are fruits and both are healthy dietary choices but you would probably eat more grapes than apples in a single sitting but that does not mean that grapes are more nutritious than apples. Missy hasn’t released a song in ten years but Future has released three mixtapes and an album all in 2015 and apparently there are more projects ready to release this year. Not to say that one is better for us than the other because we do need both types of music but you can’t survive on grapes alone. Sometimes you need to take a bite of the apple to remind yourself that there are other fruits out there and to give your taste buds something different.
Good Hip Hop always prevails and can stand the test of time. You can’t say you don’t know who will be here in ten years because I’m pretty sure it will be the same people who were here ten years ago; Jay Z, Missy, Nas, T.I., Jeezy, WuTang Clan, Lil Wayne, and others. The newcomers that survive the game are obviously Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Big K.R.I.T., and others. Now, add-in the new comer who is in their rooms writing, rhyming, and studying right at this moment and that’s who will be here in ten years. We the consumer may not be here in ten years! With constant advances and changes in technology who knows how we’ll be consuming our music in ten years and the same goes for music videos. Quality over quantity! Just because an artist is in constant rotation on television and radio does not mean that they aren’t dropping a bunch of junk on the consumer just to stay relevant. In this new age of music if you’re out of sight you’re out of mind and you can’t stay gone too long, unless you are a true talent.
