#HHIBH /// 003: Outkast & Missy Elliott

Outkast is the Atlanta duo consisting of Andre 3000 (Andre Benjamin) and Big Boi (Antwan Patton). Outkast was one of the Rap acts to bring some attention to the Atlanta Hip Hop scene. After battling each other in high school they linked up and became 2 Shades Deep. In 1993 they released their first single “Player’s Ball” and the demand for a full length album quickly followed. They signed with LaFace Records and released “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik” in 1994. In 1996 they released their second album “ATLiens” and “Aquemini” in 1998 al with huge gold selling singles. By their fourth album “Stankonia” they were a staple in the Rap game. The dynamics between the two on record was the fusion of two diverse individuals. Their fifth album has sold more than any other Hip Hop/Rap act, group, or duo. “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” later went diamond going platinum over ten times making them the highest selling Hip Hop artists of all time.

Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott also known as Melissa Elliott is a  multi-talented artist hailing from Virginia. Early on Missy worked with Devante Swing of Jodeci as a member of a girl group, Sista. After the label fell through and no debut album Missy hit up an old friend who just happened to be Timbaland. Missy wrote massive hits for other artists while labels were discouraged by her ‘image’. Signing with Elektra Records in 1996 she was able to release her now classic album “Supa Dupa Fly”. Her over-the-top videos directed by Hype Williams brought on more attention. At the same time Missy produced songs for the “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” soundtrack. In 1999 Missy dropped “Da Real World” followed by “Miss E…So Addictive” in 2001. The single “Get Your Freak On” won a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. Two albums later Missy would win another Grammy for “Work It” as Best Female Solo Performance. As an emcee, songwriter, and producer Missy Elliot is unlike any other emcee to date.
