Implied Consent

Faces made famous via Hip Hop Culture have always been targeted by the police. Since the culture being associated by primarily Black and Hispanic Americans that’s no leap to judgement. The NYPD and the LAPD are notorious for their treatment of the aforementioned demographic and I’m sure most of you have had some type of encounter with the police yourselves. Somehow people still believe that once you’ve made it that those types of issues disappear and only happen to poor or middle class citizens. I’m not sure why especially if their skin tone is any shade of brown. Dr. Dre, formerly of N.W.A., was recently inconvenienced by white privilege while trying to pull into his own driveway recently. In a town where the police know each and every person they still allowed a random guy to place Andre under “Citizen’s Arrest” due to his prejudice beliefs.

As a person of African descent our skin color does not give any other person, including other minorities, to treat us however they choose based on their personal implicit bias. No person has the right to touch a Black woman’s hair whether it’s weaved up or covered with a bonnet. Our skin color does not give you the right to kill us on the streets like animals. Our skin color does not imply consent for anyone to disrespect or belittle us. Listening to Rap music does not imply my level of intelligence. If you imply any of these things than you are assuming that all of the above is alright. Do not assume that I am the docile negro that you read about in your history books. That is why Hip Hop Culture was created; for us to have the “RIGHT KNOWLEDGE, RIGHT WISDOM, RIGHT OVERSTANDING, RIGHT SOUND REASONING, TO BRING ABOUT RIGHT WAYS AND ACTIONS.” The right to sound reasoning was not used during Dr. Dre’s Citizen’s Arrest and then to know that the judge only threw out the case due to insufficient evidence. What evidence do you need? Oh, the evidence was his brown skin. Dr. Dre is a billionaire and was once a member of one of LAPD’s arch nemesis, N.W.A.

Those police officers reminded Dr. Dre and all of us that no matter who the CEO of our country is, no matter how much money you have, or what PWIs (Predominantly white Institution) you’ve donated to that what???? *Insert Kanye line here* I wonder what would have happened if Dr. Dre would’ve opened his mouth to refute anything that as said or done at the scene? We know for a fact that even if you’re a behavior therapist, law abiding citizen that legally carries a gun, or does everything they’re supposed to at a traffic stop that you can still get shot down like Old Yeller by police officers. Implied consent is consent which is not expressly granted by a person, but rather implicitly granted by a person’s actions and the facts and circumstances of a particular situation (or in some cases, by a person’s silence or inaction). If we continue to stand here and be silent we will forever be taken advantage of and disrespected by any and everybody. As a low-income or middle class citizen we don’t have the power (money) or resources to save ourselves so we have to do what we have to do initially if we don’t want to be inconvenienced or disrespected by white privilege and implicit racial bias. Don’t be stupid, but don’t be stupid.
