Intrinsic Motivation

Happy New Year Hip Hop Heads! We made it to 2017 and hopefully we will start to see a few changes in mainstream Rap music, fandom, and the industry overall. You have to be motivated by certain things if you want to be successful in Rap/Hip Hop or any line of work for that matter. We have to be motivated by certain things if we want to be successful in life altogether. Success is defined by you and how you live your life. You can be a successful garbage disposal worker or you can be a successful garbage Rapper. It has been provide repeatedly that you can be successful at both of those positions but if you’re motivated by outside forces such as personal or financial gain than you’ll only become but so successful. Being motivated by internal forces such as enjoying what you do or maybe the personal or financial gain of someone other than yourself is called intrinsic motivation. This year the Hip Hop community needs to overthrow the Rap music industry. The industry is extrinsically motivated by money, fame, drugs, and promiscuity whereas those who participate in the culture are intrinsically motivated by the music itself and how it makes the fans feel when they hear it.

Think about the current Rappers, Emcees, and Dee Jays who are motivated either intrinsically or extrinsically. Someone like a Snoop Dogg, Jay Z, Just Blaze, Swizz Beats, or a Remy Ma. These people have been in the Rap game for decades and now they don’t need to be motivated by money, drugs, or other distractions. Remy Ma may not be as “big” as the other names but her motivation is still the same. Rappers will say they’re motivated by “the grind” or the “broccoli” but that’s the braggadocio side of Hip Hop. Future, Desiigner, Kanye West, and others seem to be motivated by money and fame. A lot of the young Rappers are because they are trying to find the quickest way to get out of the hood and in this social media age it’s likely to happen. You can tell the difference in someone who has a new sense of purpose and you can tell if someone is motivated both intrinsically and extrinsically. Look at Gucci Mane he clearly has had a change and it is evident in his mental state, speech, and his music. Just because someone “has money” doesn’t mean that they aren’t motivated to get more which is makes them what? Greedy, and we all know where greed can lead.

Now I’m not in the thoughts of the people I’ve mentioned but if their music does not motivate you intrinsically don’t be lead to believe that extrinsic motivation is all there is. If you feel something different in your soul or your heart than your peers or counterparts it’s a different type of motivation. Be around other people who motivate you and listen to Hip Hop music to maintain a high level of motivation. We can get lazy and complacent but we need music that will intrinsically motivate us to do more and be better. Rappers can write songs about Trump for the next four years but if the music isn’t providing a plan of action they’re just complaining. Honestly, just think about it. A lot of Rappers are in a higher tax bracket than we are so they’ll benefits from Republican tax cuts. They can afford healthcare, childcare, and higher education. Their priorities don’t even line up with ours so I’m sure their motivations are also different. We can say things like “I do it for my kids” or “do it for the culture” all day long but if there’s any inkling of selfishness involved your endeavors you will pay for it, one way or another.
