Word of Mouth

Good morning, good morning Hip Hop heads! I know you all can feel my positive energy as you read this so I hope everything is well with you all. Words. Words are defined as a single distinct meaningful element of speech or writing, used with others (or sometimes alone) to form a sentence. Sometimes you can be at a loss for words or you might be someone who’s good with wordplay never the less as a person you can understand the words coming out of people’s mouths. Sometimes we use other words in the sentence to give us context and clues as to what is being said. Some Rappers use a lot of words and some don’t. Some Rappers know a lot of words and some don’t. Some Rappers study words and some don’t. The only way to know what works is to look to those who are still “successful”. The Puff Daddy’s, the Jay Z’s, the Nas’, and the Dr. Dre’s. There are some who have been able to sustain their careers just as successfully like Ghostface Killah but today success is only real to people if they see it for themselves. Stunting equates to success. Social media likes and shares equate to success. Even being on reality television equates to success and none of these are indicative of such.

What type of words do you use? Do you use obscenities? Do you use slang? What language(s) do you speak? I still can’t believe Spanish isn’t the second language in the U.S. (I mean I can but that’s another topic for another day.) Trump isn’t a man of many words but he’s the face of this country right now. It is important to use your words appropriately in front of the right people at the appropriate time. Adults and young people hear things differently just like they see things differently. It’s all about the point of view. Sometimes we think our young person can handle hearing certain things but they really can’t. Young people are popping pills, drinking alcohol and lean, and still doing other drugs because of the words that they hear. Logic’s 1-800-273-8255 is a great song but if the hook or the chorus is the catchiest and no one listens to the verses what do you think will repeat in their minds constantly?

Future’s most popular line is what? Even if you don’t like what comes out of some people’s mouths this country allows anyone to say whatever they feel whether it’s demeaning, hurtful, hateful, or threatening words hold power and you have to wield your power appropriately. Expand your vocabulary and learn more words. Expand your mind and learn another language. Share what you’ve learned in conversation. Share what you’ve learned with a young person. Share what you’ve learned in a rhyme. Listen to the words being spoken by others. I’m talking about active listening where you have to respond to what is being said. There was a time when learning, reading, and writing were illegal. Knowledge is illegal yet reading is fundamental but trust me, we don’t want to be stuck in a rift.
